The Arcane Scroll Writer by Mick-o-Maikeru The Arcane Scroll Writer by Mick-o-Maikeru
" Many would debate, which is rarer; a quill made from a feather of an azure phoenix or the golden ink known to breathe magic into every letter it creates. However none disputes the rarity of a magic scroll writer. An arcane art of binding magical properties with scrolls. These scrolls could later be used to cast the spells they contain using less energy then they would have normally required. Although very popular amongs apprentice magicians, these scrolls also served many warriors whom did not posses the required level of magical energy to perform these spells otherwise or by higher level mages whom carried these scrolls to be used in dire situations to preserve their energy. Only a handful of mages have mastered the art of magic scroll writing and are heavily respected amongst magic academicians. "

Im starting to grasp digital painting better. I had a better understanding of the "forms" i used this time however i couldn't resist butchering physics for esthetic reasons in certain parts (for instance. there shouldn't have been a "color red" in a picture using cyan light since cyan light does not bounce off red surfaces). I will try to stay away from mostly cyan light sources for a while and try my hand at something more natural such as yellow light.

Any comment or critisizm is much appriciated!

Interesting description. My story world has no shortage of magic or magic users. Scroll writing is probably required curriculum at a school of magic. Of course so is mana economics. My mage character Ashton would be concerned with a world where magic scroll writers are rare. There'd probably be a good reason for it. Well very good art and interesting take on magic and magic users.

I think the use of cyan light against the red worked very well, and you used it very effectively to tie the red of his eyes in with the rest of the image.  Plus... you could always claim the stole and hair bands were magical artifacts he crafted similarly to the scrolls. ;)  Beautiful, beautiful work!!

Yes, but is magic, so the red even though you have a cyan light source is possible! :) I really like both the concept and your execution. Congrats on the DD!

I think cyan gave it a certain unique flair you don't see in most fantasy works. Yellow light would take the strangeness and magic out of the scene, and the cool blues that drew me to the painting in the first place wouldn't be as prominent. But that's only my opinion. It's wonderfully done, at any rate, and I love the perfect blend of lion and man in the character. It's balanced so well, it looks very natural. Like someone you'd meet walking down the street.

This is genius! And I'm awed that you even check against light's physics in art, it's like a Voltron of science and drawery!

And this piece...it's so quiet and mystical. The lighting is fantastic. I love all the little details and the smoke effect. The description is really well-written too.

X3 I can't stop imagining that he has a daily quota to put out, like he does this for a living, 9 to 5

Thank you! I studied science back in high school, so im somewhat obsessesive when it comes to light and colors but i was never really able to integrate them to what i draw. This kind of digital drawing is still rather new to me since i used to only work with vectors and flat colors, and i must say im really enjoying it so far.

Happy to hear you liked it! Oh and, i personally imagined this character to be more of an elder academician who creates these scrolls for educational purposes, but feel free to imagine as you please :) .
